Bottleneck basket

Tubatulabal, Native American

Not on view

This basket’s rich coloration, sculptural form, and controlled design set it apart as a masterwork. The typical composition of dark designs on a lighter field has been reversed. Quail feathers and a short fringe of red wool yarn distinguish the curvature of the basket’s body from the flat plane of its shoulder. Jar-shaped baskets with square shoulders and small upright necks are referred to as bottleneck.
