Sir Muirhead Bone was a Scottish printmaker and watercolor artist noted for his depictions of architectural and industrial subjects, city views, landscapes, and his work as a war artist in both the First and Second World Wars. In this wispy panoramic vista across the Venetian lagoon, Bone depicts a a boat-filled Canale della Giudecca, with the Il Redentore church on the left (on Giudecca island) and the Santa Maria Della Salute church on the right. Apart from a few gondolas in the right middleground behind a mooring post "anchoring" the composition, most of the print is blank; Bone skillfully used the unprinted areas of the paper evoke the vast expanse of water and sky.
