A Brace of Blackguards

Thomas Rowlandson British

Not on view

The scholar Grego identifies these two rough looking characters at an inn as a self-portrait by Rowlandson (shown adopting a pugilist's stance) and a portrayal of his friend the artist George Morland (seated with a Shillelagh, or club, and pipe). The boxing theme is extended to images pasted or drawn on the back wall.
