During the Civil War, many banks issued their own paper currency, as did some stores. This helped to keep local money spent locally, but did the soldiers little good.
This bill was issued on August 1, 1861. The center vignette shows a herd of cattle in the foreground and a steam locomotive in the background. At ther ight is a basket full of produce with ears of corn laying around.
