In 1751 Lord Brudenell went on an extended Grand Tour accompanied by his tutor, Henry Lyte. In a letter to Brudenell’s father, Lyte reported on their visit to Versailles, where the Hall of Mirrors was splendidly illuminated, they saw the king and queen at play, and "Lord Brudenell wore his blue velvet for the first time." Could it be the same costume in which the young man was later portrayed by Batoni? The artist rendered the sheen of the fabric convincingly and his sitter’s features with remarkable sensitivity.
