Basket jar

Chumash, Native American

Not on view

Thoughtful planning, technical expertise, and inspired artistry are reflected in the form and pattern of this basket jar. Alternating blocks of linear and checkered patterns subtly contract as they approach the neck, reflecting the curvature of the form. A narrow strip of diamond shapes counteracts the vertical banding of the overall design, giving the vessel a rotational energy. On the bottom, concentric circles of crosses, triangles, and diamonds radiate outward.
