Socorro black-on-white storage jar

Ancestral Pueblo, Native American

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 746

Ancestral Pueblo peoples used these large jars to store dried food. The freely painted design features abstract black forms outlined in white that appear to float on a background of fine hatching. Stepped, straight, and curving designs and motifs of human hands are integrated throughout. The meandering rhythm of the composition on the jar’s expansive form renders the carefully organized repetition of these pictorial elements nearly unnoticeable.
