Northwest Corner of Louis XIV’s Bedroom
Not on view
Only a few drawings depict the royal bedroom, located at the center of the palace, the site of important ceremonies such as the king’s lever (formal awakening) as well as the public audiences of foreign ambassadors. Although rendered sketchily, the tapestry on the wall next to the fireplace is recognizable as belonging to the door-curtain series Portières des Dieux (Curtains of the Gods), representing the Elements and the Seasons, woven at the Gobelins manufactory after designs by the painter Claude Audran III.
