The Marais Grove

French

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 899

This precise, if somewhat naive, depiction shows the gates enclosing the Marais Grove, which were put in place in 1685 to protect the secluded space against vandalism. One could gain access with the help of the gardeners, seen at work here, who carried the key. The painter included a turbaned visitor admiring one of the water features.
