Pennell, a Philadelphia-born Quaker, spent the first two decades of his career abroad, living primarily in London, where he became a close associate of Whistler. Here, he represents Chicago's vast stock yards, with telegraph poles adding points of definition, factories in the distance, and two flat roofed sheds in the foreground. The artist printed about fifty proofs.
