Tombs, Plate 3

Artist and engraver Charles Hutin French

Not on view

Plate 3 of a series of designs for tombs. This design shows an oval niche framed by a wreath and containing the bust of a man. Under this medallion, on a shelf above a tablet, is a palette. The tablet is inscribed and under it is an escutcheon. On either side of the tablet, resting on the baluster, are a mornful woman carrying a cross, on the left, and an angel, on the right. Below them is an arched niche containing the sarcophagus over which is a winged skeleton with a scythe handing a scroll to the woman on the left.
