Portrait of a Man

El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos) Greek

Not on view

Only a few portrait miniatures by El Greco are known. This one is signed on the back, in Greek, "Domenikos Theotokopoulos made [it]." El Greco’s authorship has been debated, but specialists now agree that the painting is entirely consistent in style and quality with the artist’s naturalistic portraits of conventional size dating from the late 1580s, a period also suggested by the sitter’s ruff.
