Tea Caddy (Chaire)

Japan

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 199

The shape and design of the tea caddy suggests that it was originally a small jar, modified by adding the ivory lid. The decoration, a version of the whirl-and-wave pattern, is based on Chinese blue-and-white porcelain.
