Amulet Depicting the God Min
Middle Kingdom
Not on view
This object is not part of The Met collection. It was in the Museum for a special exhibition and has been returned to the lender.
This rare amulet depicts the creation and fertility god Min, who was one of the most ancient Egyptian deities. Placed with a burial, Min would have helped the deceased to achieve rebirth. A dramatic event seems to have unfolded in this tomb, which also contained the pectoral with birds: a robber dragged the mummy from its coffin, but during this act of desecration the tomb ceiling collapsed on him, preserving the jewelry and a startling ancient crime scene.
