Block Statue of the Steward Senwosret-senebefni

Middle Kingdom

Not on view

This object is not part of The Met collection. It was in the Museum for a special exhibition and has been returned to the lender.

Block statues, an innovation of the Middle Kingdom, depict an individual observing a ritual. They generally show a male official in an enveloping cloak with knees drawn up to the chest so that the body becomes a cube with crossed arms on the top and protruding head and feet. Other figures can be added, such as this small image of Nebetka, likely Senwosret-senebefni’s wife. The statue was once in the collection of Napoleon Bonaparte and his wife Josephine.
