Women at Takanawa Beach
Utagawa Toyokuni I Japanese
Not on view
Utagawa Toyokuni, Kuniyoshi's teacher, was the most influential artist of the Utagawa school. Toyokuni's tall, elegant women share the ideals of beauty codified in the late eighteenth century by Utamaro and Kiyonobu. In this print, the center sheet of a triptych, three women and two boys are walking along the Takanawa Beach, a sightseeing spot near Shinagawa in Edo (Tokyo).
