Fragment of an Inscribed Vessel

New Kingdom

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 122

Storage jars and amphorae often bore inscriptions identifying their contents and the place delivering the provision. Of the inscription written on this vessel, only the words 'regnal year 40' remain, but they are enough to date the piece to the reign of Ramesses II or Thutmose III, the only two kings of the New Kingdom to reign for fourty years and more.
