Head of king Amasis from a sphinx
Late Period, Saite
The side view reveals that this fragment projected horizontally backwards, identifying it as a sphinx. The narrow face and brows high up near the headdress are judged to be features of Amasis, the long ruling next to last king of the dynasty whose successor only ruled for a year before the Persian Dynasty.
