Rebab

Indonesian (Sundanese)

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 681

In the gamelan ensemble, the bowed rebab, a spike fiddle different from the shorter North African instrument of the same name, freely ornaments the melody. In the northeastern Malaysian states of Kelantan and Terengganu, the rebab is sometimes used in healing rituals.
