Sintir

possibly Sudanese

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 681

The distribution of this low-pitched, plucked lute is confined to Morocco and Algeria, where it is used by the Gnawa people. It supports singers along with rhythmic clapping and quarkabeb (clappers), and at times it aids ritual trance induction.
