Vase
Karl Klaus Austrian
Manufacturer Serapis-Wahliss (Turn-Teplitz, Bohemia, Austria)
Not on view
A former student of Josef Hoffmann, Klaus conceived this sophisticated vase with its richly colored enamel and gilt decoration for Serapis-Wahliss, a noted Viennese retailer and manufacturer of porcelain. Made of white earthenware and hand painted with stylized, geometric blossoms and serpentine golden dots, the vessel represents the height of innovative Austrian ceramics in the early twentieth century.
