The monumental stature always given to the Greek goddess of war is easily perceived here, even if her helmet, staff, himation, and peplos are only suggested. Like de Kooning, the artist’s neighbor from 1949–53, Tworkov generated his abstractions from the figure. Several works from this period bear titles that refer to Homer’s Odyssey.
