The Unicorn Surrenders to a Maiden (from the Unicorn Tapestries)

South Netherlandish

On view at The Met Cloisters in Gallery 17

In the midst of the wood, an enclosed garden of roses appears. Here, the tamed unicorn pauses, staring toward the figure of a maiden, her image now lost but for her right arm and the delicate fingers that fondle the beast's mane. Entranced by her, the unicorn does not respond to the dogs that jump on its back.
