The Hunters Return to the Castle (from the Unicorn Tapestries)

French (cartoon)/South Netherlandish (woven)

On view at The Met Cloisters in Gallery 17

white beast perishes at upper left, eyes rolling back, tongue hanging. Then, it is transported, slumped over the back of the horse. Eager spectators look on from the castle; one hunter has already grabbed the beast's valuable horn.

But the lady of the castle fingers a string of rosary beads that hangs from her sash, introducing a touch of reverence. The beads are woven with great care, showing that they are correctly arranged in decades of ten, separated by larger "Ave" beads. Does their pearly tone indicate that they are ivory?
