"The Awakening of Kumbhakarna in the Golden City of Lanka", Folio from a Ramayana

Not on view

Kumbhakarna, the giant brother of the demon Ravana, was tricked by the gods into asking Brahma for interminable sleep. Here Ravana’s demon attendants attempt to rouse this fierce warrior. In the lower register, outside the palace walls the monkey and bear army gather and surround Rama and Lakshmana who converse with their kings Jambavat and Sugriva. Early Mughal characteristics include the complex architectural composition and the distinctive treatment of the rocks and trees. The spotted demon attendants are inspired by Persian divs, a reminder of the presence of Iranian-trained artists in the Mughal atelier.
