Head Ornament

Not on view

The silver and coral pendants on this head ornament (talgamut) would have rested on the forehead of the Amazigh (Berber) woman who wore this piece. The multiple chains would have stretched over the crown of the head and attached to a scarf or other fabric head covering. Small hooks on the right and left side could have attached to dangling ear ornaments, suspended from this jewel, to alleviate the weight. Traces of green and yellow enamel can be seen in the front part of this well-worn ornament, and the piece would have originally had a bold polychrome appearance.
