Folio from a Qur'an Manuscript

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 457

This folio from a Qur'an is written in Maghribi ("Western") script, so-called for the region of North Africa and Southern Spain where it was developed and popularized. Identified by its curvilinear form, Maghribi script is also characterized by the emphasis of letters dropping below the line. The main script is in brown, while diacritical dots in blue and green punctuate the text, and the tri-lobed knotted motif in gold serves as a verse marker.
