Zodiac figure of a tiger
Qing dynasty (1644–1911)
Not on view
Originally created to represent the hours in the Chinese calendar, the twelve zodiac figures gradually assumed other functions over time. This small sculpture, along with other members of the set, would be displayed in the home. The work was believed to protect the residents by dispelling any evil spirits.
