Karl Blechen German

Not on view

Blechen painted this sketch in the largest public park in Berlin. Different combinations of light, foliage, and water prompted him to vary his brushwork, which is especially lively where the tips of the branches alternate with reflections on the pond's surface. The artist’s appreciation for the spontaneity of sketching out of doors was galvanized by his encounter with Johan Christian Dahl, whom he met in Dresden in 1823.
