Madonna and Child with Saints

Giovanni Bellini Italian

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 608

In the first decade of the 16th century, Giovanni Bellini had one of the largest painters’ workshops in Italy. Although the artist’s name prominently appears on the folded piece of paper stuck to the marble parapet running across the bottom of the painting, this work was probably produced in that context, at a time when the young Titian may have been assisting there. The large scale of this painting, which centers the Virgin and Child between four saints against an expansive sky, indicates that it was an important commission, although there is no record of where this painting was before 1800. The names of the saints at either side (from left to right: Peter, Catherine of Alexandria, Lucy, and John the Baptist) might provide an eventual link to the patrons.
