In 1864 Homer designed two series of lithographed collectors’ cards titled Life in Camp. Subjects include the daily realties that were part of army life. Here, an African American worker constructs a trench, securing a basket-like form that will be filled with rocks to create a protective barrier for Union riflemen (see 47.91.25(199)).
