Jacques Callot French

Not on view

The depiction of the Siege of the Citadel of St. Martin on the Île de Ré was commissioned by Louis XIII in 1628. The plates illustrate French victory at the command of Cardinal Richelieu. This plate depicts the central portion of the Île de Ré. Towards the bottom center of the plate is the Citadel of St. Martin, denoted by a Greek cross. Here, Callot illustrates the arrival of the first rescue ships, having managed to pass through the English fleet.
