"On the Corniche Road," an early idea for "Sketches Abroad with Pen and Pencil"
Felix Octavius Carr Darley American
Not on view
The artist represents figures and animals on road beside the sea in Europe. At left, women ride donkeys away from us, one slung with wicker panniers and also supporting a child. Nearer the seawall, two monks walk towards us. Darley included the righthand monk and the nearest donkey in an illustration found in his book "Sketches Abroad with Pen and Pencil" (1868) (see MMA 54.558, p.108), but within a reworked composition.
