The costume ball took place at Webster Hall in New York City on December 15, 1933 to raise funds for The Artists and Writers Dinner Club. The club was Sloan's idea, who at the time was President of the Society of Independent Artists. Modeled after the Actors Dinner Club, the organization provided meals to artists and writers who have difficulty providing for themselves, see: Morse 1969, p. 308.
