Hakone; Kosui
Utagawa Hiroshige Japanese
Not on view
Boasting splendid scenery, the Hakone pass nevertheless presented an extremely difficult mountain journey to travelers. One could look out from the pass over the clear waters of Lake Ashi toward Mount Fuji's peak and the Hakone Shrine in a dark forest. The steep, narrow mountain path pictured here allows us a view of a long procession. This print demonstrates Hiroshige's genius in translating nature into graphic composition.
