In this collaborative work, Saint-Aubin’s lively handling of pen and wash lends an animated quality to the figural and ornamental motifs that embellish the otherwise precise architectural drawing by Blondel. A study for an illustration in Blondel’s four-volume Architecture françoise, published between 1752 and 1756, it depicts the courtyard facade of the amphitheater of the Royal Academy of Surgery (Académie royale de chirurgie) in Paris. Above this is an elevation of the portal one passes through when entering the courtyard from the street.
