Textile fragment

Parthian

Not on view

The preserved shape and felt joins of this fragment indicate that it possibly belonged to the shoulder or neckline of an infant’s garment. The dense material was felted without previous weaving. Under microscopic examination, together with the small diameter of the brown undercoat fibers, a mixture of thicker guard hair fibers can be seen. As these two fiber groups from the same animal were usually separated and used for different purposes, their presence here points to the use of imperfect technology.
