Carnival Ball

Sarah Charlesworth American

Not on view

Using only the available light in her studio, the artist positioned a glass sphere on the rim of crystal glass so that the striped backdrop is filtered through its transparent, yet distorting, surfaces. As the glass tapers down into variously faceted sections, for instance, the stripes seem endlessly refracted and subdivided—both faithful rendition and magic trick.
