"Londres, 31 Sackville Street, Juin 1839 // Monsieur // Ayant entendu que M. Strangways envoye un courier en Italie, je profite de cette occasion pour vous envoyer un petit paquet de mes dessins photogéniques. Je crois que ce nouvel art de mon invention sera d'un grand sécours aux Botanistes. Surtout les dessins que je fais avec le Microscope Solaire;. Je me borne à present à un grossissement de 100 fois en surface, ce qui suffit pour un grand nombre d'objets: peutêtre j'arriverai un jour à quelque chose de plus considérable. // Croyez moi, Monsieur, Votre très humble serviteur // H. F. Talbot // J'ai prié M. Hammersley banquier, de Londres, d'acquitter la petite somme que je vous dois, par son correspondant à Bologne. Une de ces plantes servira pour votre Fl. Italica. Je l'ai cueilli un jour à Gênes. Croyez vous que c'est le Bromus maximus?"


[Having heard that Mr. Strangways is sending a courier to Italy, I will take advantage of this occasion by sending you a small package of my photogenic drawings-- I think that this new art of my invention will be a great aid to Botanists-- Above all, the drawings which I have made with the solar microscope;-- I am able at present to achieve an enlargement of 100 times in surface area, which suffices for a great many objects: perhaps I will arrive one day at something even greater. [...] I have asked the banker Mr. Hammersley, of London, to settle the small sum which I owe you, through his agent in Bologne. One of these plants will serve as your H. Italica. I collected it one day in Genoa. Do you think that it is the Bromus maximus?]
