Although Annan was a highly accomplished landscape photographer, he received more recognition during his lifetime for his reproductions of paintings. In 1865 Hill asked Annan to undertake one of the most difficult photographic projects of his career: to photograph Hill's eleven-foot-wide canvas commemorating the foundation of the Free Church of Scotland. To preserve detail over the painting's large surface, Annan commissioned a large camera designed especially for this assignment. Annan met the technical challenge: Rev. Chalmers, for instance, is immediately recognizable in the center of the composition. [label for Gilman IV]
