Glass bowl

Roman

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 199

The crisp, linear cut decoration seen here, achieved by cold-working of the glass as a second stage of production after blowing, was a Roman innovation. The lathe-cut design on this bowl is a simplified version of the hammered and stamped patterns found on expensive Roman silver plate. In addition to imitating metalwork, fine colorless glassware was also desirable because it closely resembled luxury items made from rock crystal.
