Sargent painted this vignette of his sister Emily (1857–1936), a talented watercolorist, and her friend Eliza Wedgewood (1857–1947) in Majorca, Spain. Emily, absorbed in her sketch, holds her paintbrush in her mouth, while Eliza looks into the distance, away from her companion. Sargent exploits the vertical format of the sheet; he eliminates the horizon and creates a tapestry effect with his near abstract rendering of foliage. Amid the loosely painted scene, Sargent creates delicate and sensitive portrait studies.
