Textile with Floral Medallions in a Decorated Lattice

With its large-scale pattern featuring an ogival lattice enclosing bouquets of tulips, carnations, and narcissi, this textile represents a common type from Ottoman Turkey. This pattern was applied to fabrics of all levels of quality—from the sultan’s wardrobe to the stalls of the bazaar—and was used for clothing and furnishing outside Turkey. Ottoman silks were particularly desired by eastern European buyers and found a variety of uses in domestic and church settings. This textile must have had a European owner who added the multicolor fringe and green lining.
