Ward, a student of Henry Kirke Brown, became known as the "Dean of American Sculpture." This page is from a sketchbook, which provides an intimate look at the artist’s working methods. Ward’s sketches include several classically influenced figures mingled with American Indians on horseback as well as a number of bison.
