Vera Neumann artfully created all of her print designs, which are each copyrighted to this day. This particular example features a timeless motif in a beautifully executed stenciled design with clean and precise edges. Stenciling with gold metallic pigment on clothing, to emulate metallic thread, was first executed by Mariano Fortuny, a clothing and textile designer, in the early 20th century. The motif itself is an example of the enduring popularity of the boteh, or paisley, which was introduced to the Western world in the 18th century on shawls from Kashmir, a region in present-day India, Pakistan and China.
