Cloche

Design House Le Monnier French
Designer Jeanne Le Monnier, French, 1886–ca. 1954 French

Not on view

This fitted cap from the French house of Jeanne Le Monnier is composed from swirls of pink metallic cord anchored atop a delicate net that would disappear when worn. Despite the synthetic hue and finish, the curls are placed in a naturalistic arrangement that elliptically frames the face with the suggestion of a part line. The house of Le Monnier was particularly admired for expert manipulation of materials, notably in openwork compositions, as seen here. The vogue for decorative wigs in bold metallic finishes was initially embraced by the more adventuresome during the mid to late 1920s and anticipated the influence of Surrealism that flourished within fashion throughout the following decade.
