Under a Cloud

Albert Pinkham Ryder American

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774

The largest of Ryder’s marines, "Under a Cloud" reflects his appreciation of the sea, first developed during his boyhood in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Even after he moved to New York in 1870, Ryder continued his contact with the maritime world. The evocative qualities of Ryder’s nocturnal seascapes are well demonstrated here: a mysterious balance is struck between the large, dark cloud and the sailboat that glides across the water.
