Castel San Elmo (from Cropsey Album)

Not on view

The inscription on this delicate, distant view identifies the hilltop fortress, the darker building in the background, as the fourteenth-century Castel Sant’Elmo, overlooking the city of Naples. The white building in front is the Certosa di San Martino, a former Carthusian monastery (now a museum).
