Anonymous, French, 17th century French
Collector Henri-Prosper-Alfred Destailleur French
Not on view
Drawing with designs for lacework with a variety of scrolling motifs, including acanthus leaves, bunches of grapes, S-curves and C-curves, shell motifs, and curnucopias with bundles of flowers and leaves, all typical of the styles of the baroque decorative styles of the seventeenth century and the reign of Louis XIV. The drawing presents a variety of design options both for corners and borders that would have been repeated for as long as was required in the making of the lace.
The design is placed on a nineteenth-century mounting with a frame executed with pink watercolor and black ink outlines and is labelled "Dessins pour dentelle" (Designs for lacework), with the handwriting of famous collector Henri Destailleur, who was also a painter, art teacher and copyist, participant of the salons of Paris, and who spent a couple of years in New York in the late 1850s.
