Bell rubbing with Saint Nicholas

Not on view

This rubbing was taken from a bell that likely originated in the parish church of Koserow, on the Usedom Island. The bell was recovered from the Świna River in 1895 and is now housed in the Muzeum Narodowe w Szczecinie, Poland (previously the Landesmuseum Stettin). From a set of rubbings made from reliefs on bells ranging from the 13th to 16th century from Germany, Sweden and Denmark. The provenance of the rubbings is unknown, although several reproduce bells that were damaged or destroyed during the Second World War. This set seems to be unique in documenting medieval bell decorations.
